Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated each year on October 31. Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated on the night of October 31. At the end of summer, the Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, believed that the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits got really thin and the dead returned to earth.

Many scholars believe that because All Saints’ Day (or All Hallows’ Mass, celebrated on Nov. 1) and Samhain, are so close together on the calendar that they influenced each other and later combined into the celebration now called Halloween.

In this festival people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. To out smart these ghostly beings, people would put on masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would think they were fellow spirits.
